Abuse Scandal in Catholic Church in Germany

After Ireland not too long ago (and more examples), there is now an abuse scandal hitting the German Catholic Church (a summary so far can be found here). The conflict itself is appalling, and makes you grieve. The question that a number of church critics have raised is whether the celibacy required by Catholic Priests and the strict sexual moral teaching is in part responsible for this. I have not made up my mind completely about this yet, but, somehow, it simply does not sound right - just because you are required to stay celibate within the priesthood, you are more prone to abuse children? That simply does not sound right to me. Fact is that anyone entering the priesthood in the Catholic Church knows what they sign up for, which is, celibacy. If you use that as a cover-up for potentially abusing children - can the church as an institution really be blamed for that?
